After the weekend
Social Innovation Camp doesn’t end with the weekend.
By building a team around a back-of-the-envelope idea, we’re looking to help you to kick-start a social venture in 48 hours.
But the Social Innovation Camp team – together with our prize sponsors – provide three months of support to the winning and runner-up teams as selected by the Social Innovation Camp judges at the end of the weekend.
And for Social Innovation Camp June 2011, here’s what’s on offer:
About Firstport
Firstport supports new and emerging social entrepreneurs across Scotland. They provide free business support, advice and start-up awards and work to identify, advise, connect, encourage and seed-fund new start social entrepreneurs.
What they’re offering
A Level 1 Award of up to £5,000 is being made available for the winner at the Social Innovation Camp weekend. After the weekend, Firstport will be working with our winners to provide advice and support to answer the all-important question: ‘What next?’ and looking at how to work with the award winner to maximise the opportunities and ideas they wish to take forwards.
About the Melting Pot
The Melting Pot is Edinburgh’s most social enterprise. A unique place in the heart of Edinburgh, they provide spaces for individuals and organisations to work, connect, meet and hold events. The only facility of its type in Scotland, The Melting Pot is a not-for-profit social enterprise that aims to inspire and support people to realise their ideas for a better world.
What they’re offering
The Melting Pot has kindly offered £1000 of in-kind support for the winner, and £250 of in-kind support for the first 2 runners-up; allowing you to chose from a range of their very valuable activities and support services. This is a great meeting place, co-working space, plus, they offer excellent mentoring and PR advice.
About Snook
Snook is a a social innovation and service design outfit based in Scotland. Since Lauren Currie and Sarah Drummond founded Snook in 2009 they have been leading the provision of service design application to projects in Scotland at a national level.
They are also in the prototyping phase of delivering their own new service, MyPolice.org, an online feedback tool that enables the public and the police to have a conversation. MyPolice was the winning idea of the last Scottish Social Innovation Camp.
What they’re offering
Snook are offering to spend one day with the winner of this year’s Social Innovation Camp to share the MyPolice journey and the learnings that have come with it. Snook are keen to see innovation flourish in Scotland and would like to combine their networks, talents and skills to add value to this year’s winning idea.
About Optimise Web
Optimise Web is an Edinburgh-based internet and software business founded in 2006. They are a ‘glocal’ team of internet marketing and software specialists, helping organisations expand their business and reputation by providing tech savvy and innovative marketing practices for online revenue generation.
The Optimise Web team members are an eclectic fusion between application/software engineers, photography, ex-bollywood film and graphics gurus, and internet marketing specialists.
What they’re offering
Optimise Web will offer a £1000 value promotional and marketing video to the winner of Social Innovation Camp. This video will aim at attracting potential investors, promoting the idea, and inform the public of social change. The Optimise Web team will spend a half-day helping film the winning team’s pitch and provide a day’s time on editing and post-production.
About IRISS
The role of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS) is to support Scotland’s social services workforce to deliver better and more innovative outcomes for the people who use services.
They’re one of the sponsors of Social Innovation Camp June 2011.
What they’re offering
IRISS are offerring a package of support to one or more of the social isolation teams to include:
- Showcase at the annual IRISS conference (in early December 2011)
- 5 days of support (this could be project support i.e. with IRISS programmers/designers or research support to build solid base for proposition)
- 12 hours use of meeting room space during set up phase
About Leith

The Leith Agency are very kindly offering to host a marketing clinic for the winner, to help them position and promote their idea.
Some help from the Social Innovation Camp team
As well as helping you make the most of these prizes, the Social Innovation Camp team will be providing three months of mentoring for all participating teams who wish to continue developing their prototypes.
This will include:
- Regular 1-1s with the team
- Our workshop on the practicalities of starting a company cheaply – from accounting to company formation, we’ve worried about all the boring bits of starting something up so you don’t have to
- Help navigating other forms of available support to start-up ventures, such as our friends Simpl, a Social Innovation Marketplace and OneClickOrgs, a service helping you set up a formal legal structure
